- Prices are pre-tax in CDN$.
- Note to Buyers: Please write your name plus the correct title, edition, author and shelf numbers on your request slip - it really helps. and list the texts that you require so that we can try to order more if there is sufficient demand and availability.
- See the general book buying tips below for more information.
Used Books:
Used books are not sold by the bookstore. Check the wall in the hall next to the bookstore for individual private sale postings, the Used Books Forum link on the right side of this page, and/or the Facebook group. Remember when buying used books to make sure you get the right title and version for this year's class. Most Canadian law text books sell in low volume and get updated every couple of years, so a book that was used last year might be outdated this term.
Coursepacks:
Coursepacks are sold separately by UOttawa Reprography - see link for location & availability.

Professors/Instructors:
- Each course professor/instructor is individually responsible for ordering the correct title/version and suffcient quantity of textbooks for each course they teach.
- Click here for textbook ordering information & forms
- Note: Please poll your class during the first weeks of class to ask if they are all able to get the books they need - if demand for a book exceeds projections, or publishers cannot send us enough books in time we will work with you to try to get more.
Some General Book Buying Tips:
- Wait for your first class to check with your prof/instructor before buying books!!! Sure, you want to be a keener and get the books right away, but this often results in people ordering the wrong book for their particular class. There are many law text books on the same subject (eg. there are 5 different first year contracts or torts books) and different books will often have similar titles. Whether you buy your books new from us or used elsewhere, its usually best to wait until the first class for the prof to confirm which books are actually required for their class and if they are mandatory or optional. They will also tell you what course packs you need and whether or not they are available at UO Reprography or another supplier. (Remember, there are no returns on book purchases.)
- Line-ups are a fact of life - this is a very small bookstore with limited space and a small staff. For the first couple of weeks of the term, there will be a line - just be patient and talk to/make new friends. Think of the big picture: you're in law school and your life path is likely better for it - this is a small inconvenience that builds character and lets you network. We will do everything we can do make the process speedy and accurate. You can help by filling in your request slip in full - full title, version, author and shelf # (this helps us find the right book for you quickly, since many subjects have books with identical titles or some classes use different versions of the same book. Getting to the front of the line and just saying "I need the first year contracts book" will get you sent to the back of the line to fill out a slip first and could cause humiliation to your furtive, fragile law student ego that could last a moment or a lifetime - in either case, we accept no liability for avoidable and remote emotional damage. Also, make sure you have enough money on your credit/debit card to cover the cost (NSF rejections waste time, require us to restack the books, and can be embarrassing since everyone in the tight space lined up behind you knows you are the poor loser who just added to their wait time). Don't laugh, it happens more often that you think. Its a vicious world, and we live in it too - just sayin'. FYI, there has been talk about merging the law school bookstores with the general UO campus bookstore in the future. Now those are real line ups. Yikes.
- If a book is out or unavailable, check this website and/or the hall list for updates - we update it as often as we can.
- Please remember that we only order the number of books specified by the course enrolment figures & information from instructors. These decisions are made well before the term starts. If we run out of a book it is usually because the enrolment estimates were too low, an instructor may have forgotten to order books in time, or the publisher sent fewer books than we ordered due to their own stock shortages. We know this is frustrating, but we can only order what is specifically requested. Please don't jump to the conclusion we are solely to blame - its equally frustrating to us and we are probably trying to fix the issue already. Do contact the bookstore manager if you need more information. (Remember, bookstore staff are law students too, so if we don't get back to you right away after you email us, its probably because we are also in class or studying - please be patient.)
- If a book is out of stock, check the updated list and/or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (before our final closure for the term) and we will try to get the book from you from the publisher. When we get the book in stock, we will contact you and you will get first priorty on the book. If you cannot come in and buy it as scheduled, we reserve the right to sell it to somebody else. Generally there are many people looking for books that are out of stock, and there is often a waiting list for people wanting to buy an unclaimed special order book. Our bookstore is very low volume seller in the larger corporate scheme of things. We try to run on a cost recovery basis and our margins are razor thin - we try to price books so we can cover shipping, taxes, payroll and other expenses. We cannot afford to be stuck with special order books that are not picked up since we might not be able to send them back to the publisher for a refund. Shipping fees for small book orders and returns are the biggest source of losses for us. Books are heavy and expensive to ship, and publishers charge us shipping fees for every book we order, whether its 500 or 5 units. On a bulk order the shipping fees are volume discounted and included in the price we charge for the book. In low volumes the cost of shipping/returning a book is porportionally very high (about $8-$20 each way, depending on weight and size) and translates into a loss for each book, whether it is sold or not.
